Tesla is expanding its most popular electric SUV with a version designed for drivers who need more passenger room without moving up to the larger and more expensive Model X. The new 2027 Tesla Model Y L uses a longer wheelbase, a six-seat interior and several comfort-focused upgrades. Although it shares its basic design with the standard Model Y, the additional space changes the vehicle’s character considerably.
A Longer Model Y With Three Usable Rows
The Model Y L measures 195.6 inches long, making it approximately seven inches longer than the regular Model Y. Most of that increase comes from its 119.7-inch wheelbase, which is 5.9 inches longer than the standard version.
Tesla also raised the roof by around 1.7 inches. Consequently, passengers receive more headroom, especially in the third row.
The only announced seating configuration includes two front seats, two captain’s chairs in the second row and a two-person rear bench. That means the Model Y L carries six people rather than seven.
More importantly, the third row is no longer reserved almost exclusively for small children. Tesla claims it provides 31 inches of legroom and 38 inches of headroom. Early evaluations suggest an adult of average height can sit in the back without pressing their head against the glass or their knees against the second-row seats.
Access could still be better, however. Passengers must walk through the center aisle because the captain’s chairs do not tilt and slide far enough forward to create a practical side entrance.
Greater Comfort for Every Passenger
Tesla has equipped the Model Y L with new 16-way power-adjustable front seats. These include adjustable thigh support, heating, ventilation and four-way lumbar adjustment.
The second-row captain’s chairs are also heated and ventilated. In addition, they offer powered reclining functions and adjustable armrests. Rear passengers receive individual air vents and an eight-inch touchscreen for climate, entertainment and other controls.
Even the third-row seats include heating, USB-C ports, cupholders and dedicated air vents.
The vehicle also uses heat-reflecting acoustic glass around the rear portion of the cabin. Combined with improved materials and suspension tuning, this helps create a quieter and more refined interior than earlier Model Y versions.
How Does the Tesla Model Y L Drive?
The longer Model Y prioritizes ride comfort over sharp performance. Its electronically controlled adaptive dampers offer two settings: Balanced and Rear Comfort.
Balanced mode aims to provide a combination of responsive handling and everyday comfort. Rear Comfort reduces the pitch, body roll and vertical movement experienced by passengers sitting behind the driver.
Early driving impressions describe the Model Y L as significantly smoother and quieter than older Model Y vehicles. It may not feel as agile as the Model Y Performance, but its more relaxed suspension appears better suited to family trips and daily transportation.
Despite its larger body, performance remains strong. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system produces a reported 496 horsepower, allowing the SUV to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in an estimated 4.4 seconds.
Range, Charging and Mobile Power
An 83-kWh battery supplies the Model Y L with an estimated EPA range of up to 325 miles when fitted with 19-inch wheels. Models equipped with optional 20-inch wheels are expected to deliver approximately 320 miles.
Tesla says compatible Superchargers can add as much as 164 miles of range in 15 minutes. Actual charging performance will depend on battery temperature, weather, charger output and the vehicle’s state of charge.
Another significant addition is bidirectional energy support. Vehicle-to-load functionality can deliver up to 2.4 kW to appliances, tools or camping equipment through an adapter. Vehicle-to-home capability can also turn the battery into a backup power source for a properly equipped house.
More Cargo Space and Family-Focused Safety
With the second and third rows folded, the Model Y L offers up to 89 cubic feet of cargo capacity. Buttons inside the cargo area allow owners to raise or lower the rear seats electrically, making it easier to switch between passenger and luggage configurations.
Tesla has also created airbags integrated into the outer edges of the third-row seats. These deploy upward to help protect rear passengers’ heads and torsos during a collision.
Furthermore, all four rear seats include LATCH or ISOFIX attachment points for child seats. The driver can control the position and heating or ventilation of multiple seats through the central touchscreen.
Price and Launch Series Equipment
The Model Y L Premium Launch Series starts at $61,990 before destination and order fees, according to Tesla’s current offers. Its total advertised price reaches approximately $63,630 after those charges.
Launch Series vehicles include exclusive badging, special interior trim, floor mats and puddle lights. Buyers also receive one year of free Supercharging, Premium Connectivity and Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
Production is underway at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, with initial deliveries expected in September 2026.
Why the Model Y L Matters
The 2027 Tesla Model Y L addresses one of the standard vehicle’s greatest weaknesses: its cramped optional third row. It offers meaningful passenger space, strong electric range and considerably more cargo flexibility while remaining smaller and less expensive than a Model X.
Its Launch Series pricing represents a substantial premium over the regular Model Y. Still, families who regularly use all three rows may find that the added comfort and versatility justify the difference.
