Apple CarPlay has been a familiar feature in many vehicles for years. Drivers use it for navigation, calls, music, messages, and apps from their iPhone.

Now, Apple is taking the idea further with Apple CarPlay Ultra, a more advanced version designed to integrate deeply with the vehicle itself.

Unlike traditional CarPlay, CarPlay Ultra does not only appear on the center screen. It can extend across driver-facing screens and show information such as speed, fuel or battery details, temperature, tire pressure, navigation, media, and vehicle controls. Apple says the system combines “the best of iPhone and the best of the car” into one integrated experience.

What Is Apple CarPlay Ultra?

Apple CarPlay Ultra is the next generation of CarPlay. It is designed to work more closely with a vehicle’s built-in systems.

This means drivers can use the iPhone-powered interface while still seeing important car information. Instead of switching between the car’s software and CarPlay, the experience is more unified.

Apple launched CarPlay Ultra first with Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada. It is available with new Aston Martin vehicle orders and is also planned for compatible existing models with Aston Martin’s latest infotainment system through a software update.

What Makes It Different From Regular CarPlay?

Regular CarPlay mainly works as a phone projection system. It brings iPhone apps to the car’s infotainment screen.

CarPlay Ultra goes further. It can show content across multiple screens, including the instrument cluster. This can make the driving experience feel more connected and modern.

Drivers may be able to see:

  • Navigation
  • Music and media
  • Speed and driving data
  • Fuel or battery information
  • Climate controls
  • Tire pressure
  • Vehicle widgets
  • Calls and messages

The Verge reported that CarPlay Ultra supports controls through touchscreen, physical buttons, and Siri, while also adding deeper integration for radio, climate, widgets, and vehicle stats.

Requirements and Compatibility

CarPlay Ultra does not work in every car. At launch, it is limited to compatible Aston Martin vehicles.

Apple says CarPlay Ultra works with iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later.

This is important for buyers. Having an iPhone is not enough. The vehicle must also support CarPlay Ultra.

Other brands may support it later. Reports have mentioned commitments from brands such as Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis, but Apple has not provided a full public timeline for broad availability beyond Aston Martin.

Pros of Apple CarPlay Ultra

One major advantage is a cleaner digital experience. Drivers who already use an iPhone may prefer a familiar interface across the car.

Another benefit is convenience. CarPlay Ultra can reduce the need to jump between the car’s native system and Apple’s interface.

It may also improve personalization. Apple says automakers can keep their own design style, while drivers can customize colors and widgets. This could make the dashboard feel more personal without losing the car brand’s identity.

Cons and Limitations

The biggest limitation is availability. For now, CarPlay Ultra is not a universal feature.

Another concern is dependence on Apple’s ecosystem. Drivers who use Android phones will not benefit from CarPlay Ultra.

There may also be a learning curve. Since CarPlay Ultra can control more parts of the vehicle experience, drivers may need time to understand where everything is located.

Apple CarPlay Ultra could change the driving experience by making the car’s screens feel more connected, personal, and easier to use for iPhone users.

It brings navigation, media, vehicle data, widgets, and controls into one deeper interface. However, the feature is still limited to specific compatible vehicles.

For now, CarPlay Ultra is most important for buyers interested in premium cars and advanced infotainment systems. Over time, if more automakers adopt it, it could become a major step in how drivers interact with modern vehicles.
